Transfer Degree Program Admission Requirements
L&C has an open-admission policy; however, certain programs have additional admission requirements.
Students pursuing a degree or certificate are expected to have a high school diploma, an Illinois High School Diploma (formerly GED), or an equivalent credential earned through home schooling.
Students enrolling in transfer degree programs must meet the minimum admission requirements outlined in Illinois Public Act 86-0954. Submitting your high school transcript helps your advisor verify whether you have met these requirements. Students who have not met the requirements may enroll in L&C courses designed to help fulfill them.
Transfer Degree Program Goals
The first two years of a bachelor’s degree—completed at either a community college or university—typically focus on general education in English, speech, mathematics, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. These courses help students explore academic interests before selecting a major.
L&C’s transfer degree programs offer high-quality courses at a lower cost, with small, student-centered classes and strong academic support to help students develop the skills needed for success.
Transferring to a four-year college or university is easy if you:
- Complete a transfer degree and select courses that meet the freshman- and sophomore-level requirements of your intended transfer institution (see articulation agreements and consult an advisor), and
- Create and follow an educational plan with a counselor or advisor.
Program Majors
Students who already know their intended major and plan to continue at a four-year institution should select a program major from the Associate in Arts (A.A.) or Associate in Science (A.S.) degree sections of this catalog. Students are encouraged to work closely with an academic advisor to ensure their coursework aligns with the requirements of their intended transfer institution.
Transfer of Course Credit
Courses in L&C’s baccalaureate-oriented transfer programs are designed to transfer to senior colleges and universities; however, each receiving institution determines which specific credits it will accept.
The Illinois Board of Higher Education encourages universities to grant junior standing and consider general education requirements fulfilled for transfer students who complete an A.A. or A.S. degree following a baccalaureate-oriented sequence. Many Illinois institutions follow this guideline, and some extend it by guaranteeing that all general education requirements are met upon degree completion.
L&C participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide transfer framework that facilitates student transfer among Illinois colleges and universities. For more information, visit www.itransfer.org.
Students should work with an advisor at L&C and at the intended transfer institution to ensure a smooth transition.
The IAI General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) is designed for transfer students. Completion of the entire GECC prior to transferring to a participating college or university guarantees fulfillment of general education requirements. If the GECC is only partially completed, the receiving institution determines how each course will apply.
The IAI GECC became effective at L&C and statewide in the summer of 1998. The acceptance and application of credit earned prior to the summer of 1998 are determined by the receiving institution.
